Another Electrochemical Automobile!

I've read of Prius owners adding batteries to their hybrid to extend the range, but the car below is for pure enjoyment!

Tesla Motors

The Tesla Roadster looks like an electric car that I would actually consider buying, and have FUN in!

It is a 100% electric car, powered by over 6000 Li-ion cells, and has a reasonable driving range, over 200 miles!  Although GM's EV-1 made a great "around town" car, its driving range initially was pitiful. (A few of them can still be seen in the small town of Honoeye Falls, NY, the site of GM's Fuel Cell Development Center.)

Electric vehicles are great for the auto performance enthusiast!  With near-maximum torque at zero RPM, the Tesla Roadster claims 0-to-60 in about 4 seconds!  With 248 hp (max) and 2500 lbs, a top speed of over 130 mph puts it ahead of most  two-seaters!

The styling is reminiscent of the Lotus Elise, which may not be a surprise, since Lotus was a chassis and safety consultant.  (Lotus engineering went into the DeLorean too!).

In a recent issue of Interface, the San Francisco section of the Electrochemical Society announced that they visited Tesla's facility. Although the members showed good taste in visiting, no one put a deposit down! However, according to a recent (2/2007) Tesla newsletter, over 300 Teslas have been sold so far. Get with the program, electrochemists!

Check the company's website for more info and downloadable wallpaper for your computer!

The man who has everything wouldn't have everything if he didn't have a Tesla! So, below is a clip from Jay Leno's Garage.
