Inspection
Redux Armed with the overheat protector, I returned to the NJ Inspection Station. This time things
went smoothly (but slowly, it seems as if all the inspectors want to either sit in the D or
fondle it) until it came to the emissions test. Older cars, like the D, do not have to do the 'dyno'
test required of newer cars; They just get a 2000 rpm 'static' test. The news was bad, but not
horrible. HC as 128 ppM (100 ppM to pass) but CO was OK (0.17%, 0.50% to pass).
I ordered an "ignition tuneup kit", an oxygen sensor,
and a pair of oil filters from PJ Grady. The ignition kit consists of plugs, spark plug wires,
distributor cap, and rotor.
I changed the oil and installed the plugs and oxygen sensor but
the distributor and plug wires stumped me! The only way I could even see the distributor cap was
by removing the engine cover and standing on top of the engine! The distributor cap, rotor, and
plug wires would have to wait!
I got a bottle of "Guaranteed To Pass" (G2P) made by
CRC Industries. CRC Industries used to be Chemical Rubber Company, publishers of the CRC
Handbook. Their offices are across the street from GAMRY Instruments, so there is yet
another electrochemistry-DeLorean connection!
I put the "G2P" in the gas tank and drove around until
the tank was nearly empty. I refilled it, and drove to the inspection station. This time
the emissions passed! HC fell to 63 ppM, but the CO was up a bit (0.23%).
I left the inspection station with my new PASSED sticker proudly displayed, knowing I was safe for another 2
years!
